Parenting Wisdom: How Trusting Your Instincts Beats Advice

Newborn Feeding, Formula Struggles, and Real Talk from First-Time Parents

Navigating Newborn Life: The Deluge of Opinions and the Triumph of Instinct

Bringing home a newborn unleashes a tidal wave of well-meaning parenting tips—some are gems, and others… 🤡 let’s just say, best left unspoken.

“You have to use this bottle!”
“Let her sleep on her belly!”
“Feed her till she falls asleep!”
“Try goat yoga together!”

Okay, maybe not the last one. But you get the idea.

Spoiler: Babies Are Not One-Size-Fits-All

What soothed Karen’s cherub might send your baby into a spiral.

As a first-time mom, I quickly realized this: there’s no one magical formula (pun intended) for raising an infant. Instead, it’s about testing safe baby care methods and discovering what fits your unique child.

Whether you’re navigating:

  • How to feed a newborn
  • When to feed your infant
  • The best burping positions for babies
  • Which baby formula is gentle on digestion
  • Or, simply how to encourage baby naps without chaos

Sure, pediatric guidelines exist—but sometimes, your little one just… won’t comply. And that’s okay.

Our Infant’s Journey: From Reflux Episodes to Formula Freedom

My husband and I are new parents to a 6-month-old little dynamo (we lovingly call her a sweet potato).

From the moment we brought her home, newborn sleep became a myth. Nothing worked.

Diagnosis: Infant Reflux Symptoms

Our pediatrician gave us the verdict: “Sounds like reflux.”

It made sense—sort of. But it didn’t explain everything.

What We Tried for Baby Reflux Relief:

✔️ Feeding her in an upright position
✔️ Burping her in every possible way
✔️ Keeping her upright 30–60 minutes post-feed
✔️ Slightly inclining her bassinet
✔️ Adding doctor-approved rice cereal to her formula

Despite all that effort… no relief.

The Baby Bottle Gauntlet ($200 Later)

“Try a different bottle,” someone said.

So we did. We tested about 12 different anti-gas baby bottles, each claiming to be the answer to colic and infant feeding struggles.

Our kitchen counter became a baby bottle showroom. And still—no peace.

Then came this gem:

“Feed her until she falls asleep. Works like a charm!”

Spoiler alert: it did not.

She overate. She vomited. Repeatedly.

That night ended in the ER. Turns out, she was overfed, aggravating her acid reflux in infants.

When It Wasn’t Reflux Anymore: Follow Your Gut

Even after adjusting her feeding, her baby sleep problems continued.

I had a hunch: this wasn’t reflux anymore.

She was visibly bloated, fussy, and squirming. To me, it screamed baby gas pain.

The pediatrician disagreed. But they’re not the ones doing 2 a.m. tummy massages.

So I dug deeper.

The Unexpected Culprit: Her Formula

She had been on Enfamil formula from the hospital—eventually switching to their “gentle” line.

But guess what? Still too harsh on her tummy.

We even tried what we affectionately called the “baby butt trumpet”—formally known as the FridaBaby Windi (affiliate link). It helped… occasionally.

Breakthrough: Switching to Costco Kirkland Infant Formula

On a whim, we tried Kirkland Signature formula (from Costco). And voilà—instant improvement in baby digestion.

✨ Results? ✨

  • Dramatic decrease in gas discomfort
  • Noticeable boost in baby sleep quality
  • Fewer tears, more giggles
  • And yes, two far less exhausted parents

We haven’t looked back.
